Quote of the day
"If our cultural life is to flourish, we must be able to ask questions. If our cultural life is to flourish, we must be allowed to discuss issues freely. Subject to the constraints of good taste and good manners, no question is off-limits, no issue is beyond examination.

This is especially so in the field of human rights. Human rights exist especially for the protection of the vulnerable, the weak and the unpopular." Julian Burnside QC, in Antony Loewenstein's 'My Israel Question' (2007) Melbourne University Press.

A call to compassionate action: dedication to international Charter for Compassion, Auckland

Rasheed Memorial Trust and a number of national faith organisations including the New Zealand Jewish Council and the Federation of Islamic Associations of NZ held a dedication to the international Charter for Compassion in Auckland on Sunday 15th November 2009.

The global unveiling of the Charter for Compassion was on 12 November and was made available at the Charter website. The Charter is the result of Karen Armstrong’s 2008 TED Prize wish and made possible by the generous support of the Fetzer Institute. It is a unique yet powerful global initiative to learn, act, and inspire others to compassion, for a more wholesome world.

The program in Auckland dedicated to the charter included the three 'Abrahamic faiths' presenting on verses of compassion followed by a group discussion on practical avenues for upholding the charter in New Zealand through projects of compassion. These proposals are to be contributed to the Charter action page: http://charterforcompassion.org/act

Videos and photos from this historic event that was significant both globally and for NZ will be uploaded shortly. All contributions to this event and to the future possibilities for practical projects of compassion in NZ were highly appreciated.

The charter's launch was held at Ponsonby Mosque, 17 Vermont St, Ponsonby with much discussion and cultural savouries and refreshments enjoyed. From this launch and initial discussion, NZ projects of compassion are now being planned. Please contribute your ideas on these to compassion@rmdt.org.nz. As for your daily acts of compassion, please contribute these to the Charter website and please send us a copy!

Visit the Charter website for further details about the Charter and its significance. We especially invite you to visit the Learn page on the Charter.

"Constructive, practical engagement key to genuine respect"

RMDT's view remains that for New Zealanders to achieve a lasting respect for each other, we need to adopt a roll-up-sleeves approach to working together for a better society, that involves practical cooperation and a charitable spirit in all our endeavours - volunteer or not. It's this sort of purposeful yet generous engagement that will achieve our ideal community - including both people and place. And for those who prefer to stand back, that's fine, but the more arm-chair you are, the less of a critic you should be!

Al-Ghazzali's Letter to a Disciple - a 21st century perspective

Imam al-Ghazzali's "Ayyuhal-Walad" - A 9 week Study Circle

Join us every Friday evening in this beautiful 9 week Study Circle commencing from the 16th of October.

Imam al-Ghazzali is famous in both Eastern & Western philsophy for amongst other things greatly influencing European scholars such as St Thomas Acquinas and others though his masterful thinking and rational analyses and critiques.

Written towards the end of his life, this 'Letter to a Disciple' was an 11th century composition by Imam al-Ghazzali, in response to a request by one of his students that the Imam write a concise summary of all his teachings.

The letter to the disciple, which he entitled "Ayyuhal-Walad" , literally meaning "O, Son", is a deep reflection as advice on acquiring knowledge for spiritual benefit, purifying one's intention and acting on the basis of the sound knowledge acquired.

This Study circle will explore the advice given by Imam al-Ghazzali in the context of it applying to us today in the 21st century.

This study circle is hosted by RMDT in collaboration with Al-Ghazzali Center in Sydney from where the study circle is broadcast. We will be able to send questions to Sydney for answering at the next lesson, so inquisitive interaction, albeit delayed, is encouraged.

Cost: $5 per session to cover hand out costs (notes).
Registration: Please quickly register on our events page. This will enable you to receive venue details by email.

For any queries please feel free to email us learn@rmdt.org.nz

NB All sessions are open to everyone, whether attendees of previous sessions or not.

Cultural Training & Development / Specialist Faith Consultancy

Greetings,

Sincere thanks to all those volunteers, participants and presenters who contributed to a highly successful Cultural Training Workshop at St Columba Centre, Ponsonby on April 29/30.

Apart from those who are awaiting the next introductory workshop, there have been numerous requests for specialised cultural training coming out of the recent workshop, which we will endeavour to fit into the the 2009-2010 program. Requests at this stage are being targeted for supply by the end of 2009.

Currently, the trust is considering requests in the areas of specialised cultural training (sector or organisation-specific), policy development (all sectors) and advanced cultural training for policy and governance. Due to some urgency being placed on specialised training, the 2nd introductory workshop will now be deferred from the original June date to later this year (date TBA).

Organisations requiring legal services ancillary to and integrated with training or policy development simply need indicate such a requirement when contacting us.

Please use the Contact Us page for an Expression of Interest form, after which we can begin to tailor a possible solution for your organisation. The quickest way to receive one is by emailing us a request to email it back to you.
